Closing the Loop: Precious Metal Recycling to Support the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Scale-Up
Modern fuel cells and electrolyzers rely on advanced manufactured materials and the use of high value raw materials such as platinum group metals (PGMs). The unrivaled stability and activity provided by PGMs play a crucial role to modern PEM fuel cells and water electrolyzer systems.
This presentation will cover the different ways how the precious metals industry is using decades of experience of dealing with PGMs in various industries. Industrialized recycling facilities ensure high end-of-life recycling rates, low CO2 footprints, and high value retention for recovered materials. The opportunities and challenges for industrial recycling of used fuel cell and electrolyzer stacks to recover advanced manufactured materials will be discussed and compared to the well-established PGM recycling.
