An agreement between Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer around the promotion of green steel distribution has been signed

A memorandum of understanding had been signed between Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer. This agreement has been made in response to the sudden growth in demand around industrial solutions which are sustainable and have a low-environmental-impact.

Hydnum Steel is the first green steel plant to be located on the Iberian Peninsula and Knauf Interfere is a company that is well-known as a leading European steel processing and distribution company. Through the Memorandum of Understanding, the companies have created a partnership which involves the overall aim of boosting the supply of emission-free green steel within Europe. Together these companies will work closely, with the intention of advancing the steel industry into a more efficient and environmentally friendly value chain. Doing this will improve the steel industry and will also highlight that throughout the steel industry, there is a strong commitment to being and becoming more sustainable.

Knauf Interfer is located in Duisburg and is a company that is a leading independent service provider, processor and distributor of steel and aluminium for mills in Europe. Due to their extensive experience in this field, the company has an international network of suppliers, along with a multitude of products. These products include a variety of both standard and special grades, as well as dimensions of steel and aluminium. It has a decentralised structure, which leads to decision-making agility, along with efficient service, it is also supported by cutting-edge technologies, plus a highly skilled team.

One of their overall goals within this collaboration, is to draw out both companies’ commitment to sustainability. To do this, the companies have planned to create a circular economy system, which will focus on recycling ferrous scrap. Creating this, will make it possible for any scrap that is generated by Knauf Interfer’ network to be recycled at Hydnum Steel’s Puertollano plant. Recycling the scrap here will close the production loop, consequently effectively ensuring a complete circular economy.

Within the pre-established agreement, Knauf Interfer will buy green steel from Hydnum for about eighty million euros every year. Plus, on top of this, the companies will work to create a green steel supply network and they will do this through the use of Knauf Interfer’s production and supply chain management platform. This is centered around a trimodal hub in Germany, specifically Duisburg. A huge benefit of this location for the inner port, is that it will make it ideal for this port to serve as a key hub to serve customers in Central European markets. Furthermore, it will help it to optimise logistics and ensuring efficient, resilient and finally, sustainable deliveries.

Currently there are also future collaboration ideas within steel product processing being spoken about, as Knauf Interfer is offering cutting, segmentation and re-coiling services. All of these services have also been specifically tailored for Hydnum Steel’s customers.
