Alberta provides Luxfer with grant for hydrogen storage solution development

Luxfer Gas Cylinders has begun the development of a new Type 4, 700 bar hydrogen cylinder and to support this project, the company has been given a clean technology grant. This state-of-the-art project is being developed in Canada.

This grant, offered by the Alberta Innovates Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, has made it possible for Luxfer to begin the construction of their polymer-lined high pressure hydrogen cylinder. This is an important project for the company to conduct, as this equipment is capable of playing a key role within the lightweight and high-volume hydrogen storage solution markets. For example, these markets include things such as fuel cell buses.

Luxfer has decided to manufacture this technology at Luxfer’s Calgary, Alberta facility, due to the benefits this location provides in being able to store gaseous pressure up to seven hundred bar. Alongside the grant and the facilities, the company has knowledge and experience of working with and developing Type 3 and Type 4 high pressure hydrogen cylinders. The cylinders that they have developed have been specifically designed for use within fuel cell vehicles.

Vice-President and General Manager of Luxfer Composite, Howard Mead, commented, “This investment helps Luxfer demonstrate its commitment to innovative methods for hydrogen storage as well as to promote environmental sustainability.”
