Chinese-designed hydrogen electrolyser stacks will be manufactured by Metacon in Sweden

Recently Metacon made the decision to expand their OEM license and manufacturing agreement with PERIC. This choice was made in order to make it possible to manufacture Chinese-designed hydrogen electrolyser stacks within Sweden.

The new agreement states that Metacon will take on the role of producing these stacks inside the company’s planned gigafactory. At the beginning of this agreement, the Swedish firm was able to secure licensing which made it possible to build, as well as sell alkaline electrolyser systems through the use of PERIC’s stacks. However, this extension enables in-house production.

Metacon has agreed to manufacture the electrolysis plants under its own brand and throughout the beginning of this process, the company will use key components from PERIC. On top of this, the parties will also make sure the systems are modified, in order for them to align with European regulations. Plus on top of this, to make sure they are as sustainable as possible, the technology will be manufactured with local parts.

So far, the license agreement has been extended to eight years, when it was previously five and it is clear that this partnership is incredibly significant, as it represents the first partnership of its kind to be arranged by PERIC both inside and outside of China.

Furthermore, it is anticipated by PERIC that within China the company will be able to reach 6.5GW of its own production capacity, within the duration of 2025. Extending the agreement means that Metacon should be able to launch production within Sweden both quickly and with a lower amount of investment. On top of this, throughout the agreement, PERIC has predicted that it will also be able to provide additional capacity, as and when it is needed.

President and CEO at Metacon, Christer Wikner, commented, “We are now further strengthening our partnership with PERIC and providing ourselves and PERIC with the conditions to be able to build a highly competitive Europen production of one of the world’s most proven and cost-effective electrolysis platforms for the first time in history.”
