Deutsche Regas will now advance its Lubmin plant as the FEED was successful

The front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase of the 200MW hydrogen production plant in Germany, specifically Lubmin, has been completed by Deutsche ReGas.

Currently the plan for this plant, involves the first 200MW phase be completed by the end of 2026 and the next steps which will follow this, will be for the plant to scale up to 500MW by 2028. This next step of the project is on schedule to take place in 2028.

Furthermore, it has been predicted that the terminal will be ready to enter operations in 2026 and it will consequently represent the ‘world’s first’ floating green ammonia cracker. This technology will have the ability to produce an estimated 30,000 tonnes of hydrogen on an annual basis.

In order to function correctly, the plant will be directly connected to the Flow Hydrogen Core Network, which will ensure that a secure supply of hydrogen will reach customers in eastern Germany, as well as industrial sites in southwestern Germany, at some point in the future.

Right now it has been made clear that the expectation of the Lubmin plant is to produce an estimated 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen on an annual basis and then this will scale up to 80,000 tonnes by 2028.

It was back in July of 2024 when Deutsche Regas first announced their plans to create a hydrogen import terminal in Lubmin. They also mentioned at the time that this project would be performed through a collaboration with Höegh-LNG (now Höegh Evi).

Head of Hydrogen Strategies at Deutsche ReGas, David Ibáñez, commented, “The completion of the FEED phase marks the successful progress in the development of the H2-Hub Lubmine. All of our hydrogen projects will make a significant contribution to strengthening the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region and a vital contribution to the decarbonisation of German industry.”
