Hyzon and New Way Trucks will supply a hydrogen refuse truck to GreenWaste for a trial

It has been agreed that GreenWaste will start to use a hydrogen fuel cell-powered refuse collections truck throughout North America. This truck will be supplied by Hyzon and New Way Trucks, as these are the companies that participated in the agreement.

At the moment the waste collection company’s current fleet is powered by 100% renewable or alternative fuels. The purpose of going through with this project, is that the new vehicle is expected to support GreenWaste in achieving their 2030 goal of reaching a 45% reduction in total combine Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its 2022 baseline.

So far, it has been arranged that the trial will commence over selected routes through the Bay Area. These places will include the City of San Jose, County of Santa Clara and finally, the towns of Atherton and Los Altos Hills.

It was last year that Hyzon provided a hydrogen-powered waste collection truck to the recycling and service company REMONDIS. This company is based in Australia and the vehicle was created domestically.

On September 17th, Hyzon revealed that they have begun a series production of its Class 8 200kW hydrogen-powered truck and this particular project is being completed in collaboration with North Carolina-based Fontaine Modification.

The vehicle that is due to be manufactured, will be created at Hyzon’s Bolingbrook facility which is located in Illinois. It will include Hyzon’s single stack 200kW fuel cell system and it has been stated that this system is ‘25% more cost-efficient than using two 110kW systems combined.’

CEO of GreenWaste, Tracy Adams, commented, “Seven years ago, we made history by commercially operating the world’s first full-sized electric side-loading waste collection truck. This pilot reinforces our ongoing commitment to zero-emission vehicles and recovering, recycling and reusing waste materials in the most innovative, environmentally responsible and reliable ways possible.”
