John Cockerill and JM have been selected by ETFuels to work on Texas e-methanol plant

It was recently revealed that John Cockerill and Johnson Matthey (JM) were selected by ETFuels, in order to support the development of the company’s e-methanol project. This project is based in Texas and it is an e-methanol project which is worth 120,000 tonnes on a yearly basis.

It has already been agreed that in order to benefit the front-end engineering design (FFED), John Cockerill will supply 210MW of its alkaline electrolyser units and these will be used for the production of green hydrogen. On the other hand, JM will provide its eMERALD e-methanol technology, as well as their synthesis catalyst.

By 2026, it is planned that ETFuels will be ready to take a final investment decision (FID) on the plant and from there, the next steps for the project will be for construction to begin before 2027. Currently it has been suggested that the total investment is more than a billion dollars.

Furthermore, ETFuels has made it clear that by 2029, the company is expecting to be producing 120,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually. To do this, the company plans to rely on co-located 500MW renewable energy resources, along with biogenic CO2 at the 22,000-acre plant.

JM has stated that, ‘The e-methanol produced in Texas is also set to avoid approximately 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, the “equivalent to planting a forest the size of 13,000 football fields.”’

CEO of ETFuels, Lara Naqushbandi, commented, “With stringent FuelEU regulation in place and increasing demands for genuine supply chain decarbonisation, we see a strong business case for scalable, low cost, ultra-low emission fuels, particularly for early adopter customers who can benefit both economically and reputationally.”

Group Executive Vice-President and President of Hydrogen Americas at John Cockerill, Nicolas de Coignac, mentioned, ‘that the scalability of ETFuels’ model makes them a “strong partner to accelerate towards robust GW-scale green hydrogen projects.”’
