Scottish Development International aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045
Scotland is emerging as a leader in the hydrogen revolution, leveraging its abundant renewables capacity to accelerate the clean energy transition. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis powered by renewables, is pivotal to Scotland's strategy for achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. A significant pipeline of projects highlights the commitment with more than 15GW of clean hydrogen production already announced. Examples include the H100 Fife project, the world’s first 100% green hydrogen heat network, supplying up to 300 homes and the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub, where BP and partners aim to establish a comprehensive hydrogen supply chain to decarbonize transport and industry.
The government’s Hydrogen Policy Statement outlines an ambitious plan for 5GW of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030 and 25GW by 2045, with significant investments planned to develop hydrogen infrastructure. Scotland’s world class energy supply chain is turning its attention to delivering the new hydrogen economy and that experience will be in demand elsewhere as others look to develop their own net-zero ambitions. As well as significantly reducing its carbon emissions, Scotland sees the energy transition as an opportunity to foster economic growth and job creation. The strategic focus on clean hydrogen is testament to Scotland's leadership in the global shift towards a sustainable energy future.
