Shell to receive ITM electrolyser stacks after FID on green hydrogen plant

ITM Power has agreed to supply Shell with 100MW electrolysers and this arrangement was created after the company made their recent positive final investment decision (FID) on the Refhyne II project.

The TRIDENT stacks which will be provided by ITM, will have the ability to supply an estimated 44,000kg of renewable hydrogen on a daily basis. Furthermore, this technology will be capable of this, whilst simultaneously partially decarbonising fuel production at the Wesseling refinery, which is located at the Shell Rheinland Energy and Chemicals Park, based in Germany. The technology will be able to do this, through the use of grey hydrogen.

It was back in December of 2023 that Shell reserved the 100MW of ITM Power’s PEM electrolyser and they made this arrangement with the idea that the technology would be manufactured by 2025 to 2026.

Shell has suggested that the Refhyne project was made possible through policies, such as the EU’s binding green hydrogen usage and targets, as well as the German Government’s regulatory framework.

Throughout this project, Linde Engineering will be working alongside the ITM project and this company will function as the EPC integrator. The purpose of this role will be for the company to support plans around starting operation of the electrolyser, which is expected in 2027.

CEO of ITM Power, Dennis Schulz, commented, “Shell is a leading global energy company, and we are proud they have selected us for this prestigious project. The performance of our latest generation electrolyser stacks in the Refhyne I plant played an important role in Shell proceeding to FID, as did their extensive due diligence on our technology and our capability to deliver this large-scale commercial project.”
