Topsoe has agreed to handle an ammonia plant’s FEED study

A new low-carbon ammonia plant is being set up in the US, specifically Louisiana and it has been announced that Topsoe has agreed to supporting and handling the front-end engineering design (FEED) study.

This arrangement was created after a contract between Topsoe and CF Industries was signed. Within this contract, it stated that Topsoe has agreed to provide its SynCOR Ammonia™ to this project, with the intention for it to be combined with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. This process will then enable the production of ammonia.

The expectation for this project is for the SynCOR technology to produce both ammonia and cost-efficient carbon capture. This is the expectation as it is suggested that this technique is the preferred technology when it comes to mega-scale ammonia production. The reason for this is because of the method’s maturity, as well as low capital and operating costs.

Choosing Topsoe to be part of this project, was an excellent decision, as it is not the first time Topsoe has been involved in a project like this. In 2023, the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) revealed that Haldor Topsoe would be providing their SynCOR technology for use within the ammonia production plant.

Managing Director for the Americas and Topsoe, Henrik Rasmussen, commented, “We believe low-carbon ammonia helps unlock the door towards a Net Zero future. Our technology offers a cost-effective route to producing low-carbon ammonia while also enabling carbon capture, at industrial-proven scale.”
