Veidekke’s asphalt plant is powered by Norwegian Hydrogen’s green energy

An excellent new decision has been made by Veidekke, who has chosen Norwegian Hydrogen to be the supplier of green hydrogen to their new convert asphalt production plant. This plant is located in Ålesund, Norway and the purpose of it is to use green hydrogen produced in Hellesylt as an energy source in the heating process within the asphalt production industry, which us commonly used for road construction.

This choice which affects the asphalt production industry, will be a hugely beneficial change to this industry in Norway. It will be beneficial because currently the traditional process requires high thermal energy, natural gas, propane, diesel and biodiesel and it makes up to an estimated 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions on an annual basis. Therefore, making this change to have a greener and better process, will have excellent impacts and be very beneficial to the industry.

On top of this, it was earlier in 2024 that Norwegian Hydrogen provided Veidekke’s other asphalt plant, which is located in Kristiansund, with the low-carbon fuel. Providing this, makes this site the ‘world’s first’ factory capable of sustainable asphalt production.

It was on the 4th of September this year, that Veidekke officially opened their second plant which is located in Ålesund. Then the Director of Asphalt at Veidekke Infrastructure, Martin Holmqvist, mentioned that he ‘hopes to collaborate with Norwegian Hydrogen on future projects.’

Furthermore, it was stated that that the Scandinavian hydrogen producer’ Hellesylt plant was able to deliver is first molecule of green hydrogen in June of 2024.

Finally, at the moment the 1.3 tonne-per-day hydrogen hub is currently in its final commissioning and testing phase. Along with providing to Veidekke, the hub will also deliver hydrogen to EV charging company Cyan Energy, along with maritime developer Skulebas.

The Director commented, “Norwegian Hydrogen is a player that not only talks but actually delivers and produces, making them an important partner for us.”

Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at Norwegian Hydrogen, Simen Skaare Eriksen, mentioned, “There are huge climate benefits to be gained by using green hydrogen within several industry segments.”
