James Haug

Associate Director, Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, U.S. Department of Energy
James Haug is the Associated Director overseeing the clean hydrogen hubs (H2Hubs) program for the United States Department of Energy and the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). The H2Hubs program consists of multi-billion-dollar cooperative agreements, which are the largest in the DoE’s history and form a public-private partnership to build and demonstrate clean hydrogen infrastructure and ecosystems across the United States. Prior to joining the DoE in April of 2024, James worked for Shell for 10 years in a variety of roles as a Vice President and General Manager, most recently leading their Downstream and Low Carbon Solutions projects portfolio across the Americas. He also held senior leadership positions in the company’s engineering and quality organizations. Before entering the energy industry, James spent the first 10 years of his career developing the world’s largest hydrogen-fueled rocket engine for Boeing-Rocketdyne and subsequently worked in advanced development programs and missile defense programs for Lockheed ‘Skunk Works’ and Raytheon Missile Systems. James currently resides in northern Virginia and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Davis and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
