Matthew Kern is a national broker in the Marsh Environmental practice and has been with the company since 2010. In this role, he advises clients in a wide range of industry sectors on their environmental exposures and insurance solutions. He also places pollution legal liability, contractors pollution liability, and combined forms that cover his clients’ operational and legacy pollution exposures. Matthew has facilitated a number of complex corporate and real estate transactions where successful closing hinged on placing pollution insurance for complex risks. More recently, his role has expanded to assess emerging pollution risks such as PFAS, and advising clients on the pollution risks and solutions for carbon capture and sequestration. Prior to joining Marsh, Matthew worked as an environmental paralegal at two large general practice firms for 13 years. While working as a paralegal, he managed environmental due diligence for several complex corporate and real estate transactions and worked with insurance brokers to place pollution policies with terms acceptable to all parties. He also managed legal administration for multiple Superfund sites, including one of the largest PCB-contaminated Superfund sites in the US. In addition, he provided litigation management in numerous toxic tort lawsuits with multiple plaintiffs and defendants. Most notably, he managed insurance archeology projects for public utilities, steel mills and other large manufacturers seeking insurance recovery for long-term environmental contamination at manufactured gas plants, coke ovens and other facilities. Matthew was also recently named a Power Broker by Risk & Insurance for 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
